  • BLACKSBURG, VA – In the rubber game of a pivotal three-game series in Blacksburg, sophomore Jimmy Jansen (Hillsdale, NJ) fired 7.1 strong innings in his first career BIG EAST start and senior Nick Cerulo (Woodbridge, NJ) hit a key, three-run home run in the fourth inning to propel Rutgers to a 10-3 win over Virginia Tech this afternoon at English Field. RU scored nine of its 10 runs with two outs, improving to 25-16 overall and keeping pace in the conference standings with a 13-5 mark. VT fell to 23-20, 10-10 BE.

A two-out error by Cory Rodriguez (Bridgewater, NJ) in the bottom of the first staked Virginia Tech a 1-0 lead, allowing Mike Blaszak (leadoff single) to score. Rutgers, meanwhile, was held in check by VT starter Ryan Kennedy for the first 3.2 innings, mustering just a walk and a Rodriguez double, before a two-out rally in the fourth. A pair of walks, sandwiched around an infield popup, put runners on first and third for Nick Cerulo (Woodbridge, NJ), who drove Kennedy’s first offering over the fence in left-center for his fourth home run of the season and a 3-1 lead.

Rutgers added two insurance runs in the top of the fifth, once again with two outs. Jeff Frazier (Toms River, NJ) singled through the left side and Rich Canuso (Monroe, NJ) followed with a single to right, putting runners at the corners for Colin Gaynor (Toms River, NJ). Gaynor worked the count full before earning a walk to load the bases and ending Kennedy’s outing. Jeff Miller (Wyckoff, NJ) then reached on an infield error, allowing Frazier and Canuso to score for a 5-1 lead. Rutgers tacked on another run in the seventh when Frazier doubled and scored on Gaynor’s two-out single and another in the eighth on a one-out single from Jason Grover (Montgomery, NJ), scoring Cerulo, who reached on a leadoff walk, stole second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Tim Querns (Cherry Hill, NJ).

After Virginia Tech cut the lead to 7-3 with pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth, RU went back on the offensive in the top of the ninth, scoring three more runs – two with two outs.. Canuso and Gaynor led off with back-to-back singles and, after a fielder’s choice put runners at the corners, Cerulo singled to center, driving in pinch-runner Steve Hook (Langhorne, PA). With two away and the bases loaded, Graig Badger (Union, NJ) singled through the left side, driving in Miller and Cerulo for a 10-3 lead.

Jansen lasted 7.1 innings and allowed seven hits and three runs (two earned) in his first BIG EAST start. Matt Pustay (Hamilton, NJ) pitched the 1.2 innings, allowing one hit and no runs. Cerulo led the 15-hit attack with his 2-for-4, 4 RBI effort, while Badger, Frazier, Canuso, Gaynor and Rodriguez chipped in with two hits apiece. Frazier finished the three-game series 8-for-13 (.615) with two doubles, a home run, two RBI and five runs scored.

Rutgers returns to action on Tuesday, when it hosts Lafayette at 3:30 p.m. at the Class of ’53 Baseball Complex.
