  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Junior Aaron Kalb (Middletown, NJ) blanked Connecticut for eight innings to win his fourth-consecutive start as Rutgers defeated the Huskies, 6-0, this afternoon in just over two hours to complete a three-game, series sweep at the Class of ’53 Baseball Complex. Kalb allowed five singles in eight innings, while Colin Gaynor (Toms River, NJ) delivered the key hit – a two-run single in the fifth inning that gave RU a 4-0 lead. With the win, RU improves to 20-13 overall and 11-2 in BIG EAST play, while extending its winning streak to 13 games, matching last season’s top streak. UConn is now 17-17, 5-8 BE.

RU struck for two runs in the bottom of the first when Graig Badger (Union, NJ) led off with a double to right, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a sacrifice fly from Jeff Frazier (Toms River, NJ). Rich Canuso (Monroe, NJ) followed with a two-out single and scored when UConn rightfielder Mike McDonough dropped Gaynor’s fly ball.

The score remained 2-0 into the fifth, when Gaynor doubled RU’s lead. With two outs and Jeff Grose (Iselin, NJ) on first, Frazier and Canuso stroked back-to-back singles to load the bases for Gaynor, who stung a line drive into the right-center gap, plating two runs.

Nick Cerulo (Woodbridge, NJ) then added a run in the sixth on a solo home run, his third of the season, and the game’s final run came across in the eighth on Grose’s sacrifice fly, scoring Cerulo, who singled earlier in the inning.

While the offense was productive, Kalb was the story of the game. He allowed a harmless two-out single in the first and then struck out the side in the second on his way to retiring 13 of 15 hitters he faced from the end of the first into the sixth inning. When Kalb did allow a base runner, he was usually bailed out by his defense, which turned three double plays on the afternoon. He also helped himself in the third when, after allowing a one-out single, he came back with a strike out and groundball back to the mound to end the inning.

Kalb (5-0) struck out six and did not allow a runner past second base all afternoon. In his four starts this season, he has worked 26.2 innings and allowed just 17 hits and two runs (0.67), while striking out 22. Kalb turned the ball over to Matt Pustay (Hamilton, NJ) in the ninth, who fired a perfect inning to finish off the gem. Canuso (3-for-5) led RU’s 12-hit effort, while Frazier, Cory Rodriguez (Bridgewater, NJ) and Cerulo added two hits apiece.

Rutgers’ streak of 13 wins is the longest in the conference and four games shy of tying the school record of 17, set during the 1992 season. More importantly, Rutgers took care of business at home, winning all 10 of its home games during the stretch, including nine in BIG EAST play. The Scarlet Knights head on the road for their next five games and do not play another league game at home until May 21, when they host Villanova at 2:00 p.m. – the first of three games vs. the Wildcats to end the regular season.

During its winning streak, Rutgers has hit .334 as a team and is averaging 6.7 runs/per game, while holding opponents to a .224 average and just 2.2 runs/game. Frazier leads the team at .500 during the stretch (21-for-41, 4 doubles, 3 home runs, 18 RBI), while Gaynor is second at .432 and Cerulo is third at .405. The pitching staff owns a 2.23 ERA and has lowered its season ERA to 4.49. Jack Ebgert (Rutherford, NJ) and Kalb are a combined 7-0 during the streak
