  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers University baseball team sent 10 men to the plate in the third and sixth innings, scoring 11 combined runs in those frames, on its way to a 15-6 win over Princeton this afternoon at the Class of ’53 Baseball Complex. Junior Jeff Frazier (Toms River, NJ) was 4-for-4 with six RBI, including his 30th career HR, and Graig Badger (Union, NJ) was 3-for-4, reaching base in five of six plate appearances, scored five runs and stole four bases, both career highs. With the win, Rutgers’ 10th in a row, the Scarlet Knights improve to 17-13, while Princeton falls to 14-13.

The Tigers held a narrow, 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the third, but Rutgers plated six runs and never looked back. Back-to-back one-out walks to Badger and Jeff Grose (Iselin, NJ) set the stage for Frazier, who hammered a line drive home run to left, his ninth of the season and the 30th in his RU career. Rich Canuso (Monroe, NJ) followed and Colin Gaynor (Toms River, NJ) followed with back-to-back singles before Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY) sliced an RBI double to left and Cory Rodriguez (Bridgewater, NJ) singled to right, plating Canuso and Gaynor. A Nick Cerulo (Woodbridge, NJ) sacrifice fly to deep center scored Defendis and finished off the scoring.

Two more runs in the fourth, on Frazier’s double and a bases-loaded walk to Rodriguez, and a single run in the fifth, on an RBI single from Frazier, gave Rutgers a 9-3 lead before five more runs in the sixth sealed the win. Gaynor led off with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on Defendis’ single. A walk to Rodriguez put runners at the corners for Cerulo, who reached on a throwing error, allowing Defendis to score. Jason Grover (Montgomery, NJ) followed with a single to right and Cerulo scored on a hustling double to center from Badger. Grose and Frazier then followed with back-to-back RBI singles to finish the scoring.

With scouts from most major league teams in attendance to watch two of college baseball’s top outfield prospects, it was Frazier who stood out, collecting a pair of singles, double and home run in four at bats, also walking, scoring two runs and driving in six. His Princeton counterpart, BJ Szymanski, finished the day 1-for-5 with a first inning single. Badger, meanwhile, walked or singled in his first four plate appearances, stealing second base each time. His hustling double in the sixth accounted for his lone RBI before a strikeout in the ninth spoiled his perfect afternoon. Gaynor extended his hitting streak to a team-best 19 games and added two more hits, finishing 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Defendis (2-for-4, 2 runs, 2 RBI) also played well for RU, which collected 16 hits in the win.

Jimmy Jansen (Hillsdale, NJ) earned the win, improving to 2-0. He went 5.0 innings, allowing 11 hits and four runs, striking out four. Grose followed with two scoreless frames before Bobby Acampora (Ocean Twp., NJ) and Tom Preziosi (Morristown, NJ) finished the game by allowing one run each in 1.0 inning of work.

The Scarlet Knights have now outscored Princeton 35-6 in the previous two meetings, including a 20-0 victory in Princeton last season. During its current 10-game winning streak, Rutgers has trailed just twice – 2-0 in the first vs. Pittsburgh (tying the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the inning) and 2-1 in the third inning this afternoon vs. Princeton (scoring six runs to take a 7-2 lead in the bottom of the inning).

Rutgers returns to action on Saturday, when it hosts Connecticut in a BIG EAST doubleheader starting at noon.
