  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Backed by standout starting efforts from Steve Healing (Brick, NJ) and Aaron Kalb (Middletown, NJ) and shutout relief outings from Erik Dial (Basking Ridge, NJ) and Matt Pustay (Hamilton, NJ), the Rutgers baseball team extended its winning streak to nine games with a doubleheader sweep of Georgetown this afternoon at the Class of ’53 Baseball Complex. RU defeated the Hoyas, 2-0, in the opener and ended the day with an 11-1 win in the nightcap, using five RBI from junior Jeff Frazier (Toms River, NJ) over the final two innings to seal the win. RU is now 16-13 overall, 8-2 in league play, while Georgetown falls to 19-20, 5-8.

Rutgers scored early in the opener, plating a pair of runs on RBI singles from Frazier and Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY) in the first inning, and then relied on the pitching of Healing and Dial to seal the win. Healing pitched five shutout innings, allowing five hits and no walks, while striking out three. He battled out of a two-on, one-out jam in the first and left two more stranded in the second before cruising through his final three innings of work. He turned the ball over to Dial in the sixth, who allowed a leadoff double to Billy Quinn, but retired the final six hitters of the game, using a strikeout of Danny Gronski to close out his first career save.

In the nightcap, Rutgers got on the board when Nick Cerulo (Woodbridge, NJ) drilled a solo home run with one out in the third and added another in the fourth on a solo shot from Jeff Grose (Iselin, NJ). Kalb cruised through the first five innings, but tired in the sixth, allowing a leadoff double and a pair of singles, which led to a Georgetown run and cut the lead to 2-1. With runners on first and second, Pustay struck out Timmy Jones to end the threat and, following a 1-2-3 sixth, Rutgers exploded for nine runs in their final two at bats.

Rutgers Prep product Erick Chandler held Rutgers in check through six innings, allowing just two hits, but ran into trouble in the seventh. Cory Rodriguez (Bridgewater, NJ) started the inning with a single to left-center and scored on the next play, which seemed to awaken the Scarlet Knights. On the second pitch to Cerulo, Rodriguez broke for second and Cerulo managed to drop a bunt down the third base line on a pitch that would otherwise have struck him in the batter’s box. Rodriguez hit the second base bag, motored towards third without hesitation and forced an errant throw from GU first baseman Jim Supple, which sailed out of play, allowing him to score. A walk to Jason Grover and Grose’s second hit of the game, a single to right, ended Chandler’s outing. Thomas Braun entered the game and was rudely greeted by a three-run home run from Frazier, his eighth blast of the season, extending the lead to 6-1.

In the eighth, RU used back-to-back singles from Jeff Miller (Wyckoff, NJ) and Defendis to start things off. With runners on second and third and one out, GU head coach Pete Wilk elected to intentionally walk Cerulo to load the bases. Three-straight walks to Jason Grover (Montgomery, NJ), Badger and Grose forced in three runs and Frazier polished off the game with a two-run double, greeting Mark Dutmers, another Hoya reliever.

Healing (4-1) earned the win in game one, while Kalb (4-0) won the night cap, allowing four hits and one run in 5.2 innings. Dial (2.0 IP, 1 H 0 R) saved the first game and Pustay (3.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 7 K) was brilliant behind Kalb, earning his second save of the season.

Frazier led the Scarlet Knights offensively, collecting three hits and an RBI in the opener and two hits and five RBI in the second game. Cerulo was a combined 3-for-4 with two walks.
