  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers University baseball team jumped out to a 3-0 lead, endured a 87 minute stoppage in play due to weather, and held on for a 6-4 win over West Virginia this afternoon at the Class of ’53 Baseball Complex, completing a three-game series sweep of the Mountaineers. Freshman Steve Healing (Brick, NJ) started the game and fired three shutout innings before threatening skies forced the delay. Junior Tom Malafronte (Somerville, NJ) shut the door with his second save in as many days to preserve the win for the Scarlet Knights, who improved to 11-13 overall and 4-2 in BIG EAST play. WVU is now 8-17 overall and 0-6 in the league.

After loading the bases and failing to score in the first, Rutgers broke through with a three-run second inning. Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY) led off with one of five walks against WVU starter Travis McGrath and scored on a triple to right-center by Nick Cerulo (Woodbridge, NJ), who failed on a pair of sacrifice bunt attempts before hammering a 1-2 pitch to the fence. Following a walk and a fielder’s choice, Graig Badger (Union, NJ) delivered Cerulo with a sacrifice fly to right and promptly scored on a two-out double from Jeff Grose (Iselin, NJ).

Healing struck out two hitters in a 1-2-3 third inning and Colin Gaynor (Toms River, NJ) led off the bottom half of the inning with a single. With Defendis at the plate, a crack of thunder preceded a warning from Rutgers’ lightning detection system, which led to the 87-minute delay. When play resumed, Healing was removed from the game and junior Aaron Kalb (Middletown, NJ) took over.

Kalb allowed two singles in the fourth, but was flawless in the fifth and fired another shutout inning in the sixth, loading the bases with no outs but escaping unscathed. Kalb used a fielder’s choice groundout and a pair of popups to end the threat and keep RU’s 4-0 lead intact.

Rutgers, which added another run in the fifth on Gaynor’s solo home run, added two more in the sixth to take a 6-0 lead. A pair of one-out walks to Badger and Grose set the table for Jeff Frazier (Toms River, NJ), who singled through the left side of the infield to plate Badger. Two batters later, Gaynor stroked a single of his own to left, scoring Grose.

Those runs proved pivotal, as Kalb got in trouble again in the seventh. A one-out single and a two-out walk set the stage for Lee Fritz’s three-run home run, cutting the lead to 6-3. Stan Posluszny followed with a triple down the line in right and Grant Psomas drove him home with a single to left, ending a very productive outing by Kalb on a sour note. Junior Erik Dial (Basking Ridge, NJ), with the tying run at the plate, struck out Kyle Matuszek to end the threat.

Dial breezed through the eighth inning but ran into trouble in the ninth, allowing a leadoff single to Jake Serfass. RU head coach Fred Hill called to the bullpen for Malafronte, who induced a popup from Fritz and a game-ending double play.

Kalb (3-0) allowed eight hits and four runs in 3.2 innings, while Dial and Malafronte pitched the final 2.1 innings without allowing a run. Healing did not allow a hit or run in 3.0 IP, walking two and striking out five. Gaynor (3-for-5, 2 RBI) led an eight-hit attack, while Grose (1-for-1, 2B, RBI) Badger (1-for-2, 2 BB) reached base in nine of 10 plate appearances.
