  • TEANECK, NJ – The Rutgers baseball team (6-11) came out swinging in its first game back in New Jersey, setting school records for runs (27), margin of victory (27) and home runs (10) in a 27-0, seven-inning rout of Fairleigh Dickinson (1-12) this afternoon in Teaneck. Junior Jeff Frazier (Toms River, NJ) and sophomore Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY) led the 31-hit attack with two home runs apiece, as Frazier finished the day 4-for-4 with two runs scored and six RBI, playing just five innings. The game was halted after seven innings for darkness.

The onslaught began early, as Graig Badger (Union, NJ) led off with a single, stole second and third and scored on Frazier’s first home run, a deep fly to left field. RU added four more in the second, highlighted by Badger’s three-run shot, and an RBI single from Frazier before building a 12-0 lead with six more runs in the third.

Defendis led off the third frame with a double to right-center and scored on an infield throwing error. Following a pair of groundouts, RU tacked on four runs with two outs, as Badger drove in another run with a single to center and Frazier smacked a three-run home run to left-centerfield.

Four more runs in the fourth on a solo shot by Defendis and a three-run blast from Jason Grover (Montgomery, NJ) increased the lead to 16-0, while a solo shot from Colin Gaynor (Toms River, NJ) in the fifth upped it to 17-0.

Even as RU head coach Fred Hill emptied his bench, the runs kept coming. In the sixth, freshman Dave Williams (Frankin, NJ) hammered a pinch-hit grand slam, his first career blast, to increase the lead to 21-0 through six. Rutgers added six more in the seventh, as Defendis smacked a three-run shot and Tim Querns (Cherry Hill, NJ) added a solo blast.

Not to be outdone, junior Aaron Kalb (Middletown, NJ) was stellar in his first start of the season, allowing just four hits and one walk in five innings, striking out six. Sophomore Jim Jansen (Pascack Valley, NJ) and freshman Chris Rini (Flemington, NJ) each added a shutout inning of relief.

Querns (5-for-6, 3 runs) led the attack, while Badger (4-for-6, 4 RBI), Frazier (4-for-4, 6 RBI) and Defendis (4-for-6, 4 RBI) also made major contributions. Freshman catcher Jeff Miller (Wyckoff, NJ) was 2-for-2 off the bench.

Rutgers scored 27 runs for the first time in school history, besting a trio of 26-run efforts: May 7, 1995 vs. George Washington (26-8); March 18, 1984 at Florida Memorial (26-8) and May 5, 1979 vs. Fordham (26-6).

Rutgers returns to action on Saturday, when it opens BIG EAST play with a doubleheader at Seton Hall, beginning at noon.
