PISCATAWAY, NJ – Junior Rich Canuso (Monroe, NJ) was named the New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association (NJCBA) Division I Player of the Week following his strong performance during Rutgers’ spring break trip to Florida. Canuso hit .600 in four games last week, collecting 12 hits in 20 at bats, including two doubles, one home run and seven RBI, posting a .850 slugging percentage. He also handled all 30 chances at first base without an error.
Canuso began his week with a 3-for-5, two RBI performance in a loss at Florida International (3/16) and followed with four hits in six at bats, again driving in two runs, in a 13-12 loss at Florida Atlantic the next day. He was 2-for-4 in RU’s 4-3 win over FIU on 3/19 and closed the week with a 3-for-5 performance, including a solo home run, in a 6-4 loss to Ohio State on March 20. Canuso raised his average 109 points during the stretch, elevating it from .239 to .348 by week’s end.
He is second on the team in HR (3) and RBI (17) this season, while posting a .530 slugging percentage and a .420 on-base mark. He missed all but six games last season with a torn ACL, but has returned to start in all 16 games at first base thus far in 2004.
Monmouth’s Glen Keeton and Rider’s Eric Weiner shared Division I Pitcher of the Week honors, while FDU’s Stephen Eng was named Rookie of the Week. At the Division II/III level, Nigel Archibald (Centenary) was named Player of the Week, while Tom McMullen of Rowan received pitching honors. Rutgers-Newark’s Ryan Clark received the Division II/III Rookie Hitter of the Week award and Rowan’s Brian McLaughlin was the top rookie pitcher
