  • BOCA RATON, FL - The Rutgers baseball team (5-11) rallied from a 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 lead into the seventh, but Ohio State tied the game on a two-out wild pitch in the seventh and scored three more in the eighth before holding on for a 6-4 victory over the Scarlet Knights today in Boca Raton.

Ohio State (7-7) scored single runs in the first and second innings, but Rutgers tied the game with a pair of two-out RBI in the fourth. Nick Cerulo (Woodbridge, NJ) got the rally started with a sharp single to center and moved into scoring position on a walk to Cory Rodriguez (Bridgewater, NJ). After a wild pickoff attempt moved Cerulo to third, nine-spot hitter Jason Grover (Montgomery, NJ) stung a single to right to cut the lead to 2-1 and Graig Badger (Union, NJ) followed with a single up the middle to tie the game.

Two innings later, RU took a 3-2 lead when Rodriguez singled with one out, stole second and scored on a two-out single down the line in right by Jeff Grose (Iselin, NJ).

In the bottom of the seventh, RU starter Shaun Parker (Mr. Holly, NJ) began to tire and allowed a leadoff walk and single, ending his day. Freshman Steve Healing (Brick, NJ) entered the game and induced a double play, which moved the tying run to third base. With two strikes on the next hitter, Healing bounced a curveball in the dirt, which squirted away from RU catcher Jeff Miller (Wyckoff, NJ) to tie the game at 3-3.

In the eighth, Jedidah Stephen reached Healing for a leadoff triple, but the freshman hurler battled back to retire the next two hitters on a strikeout and infield groundout. He then yielded back-to-back hits, giving OSU a 5-3 lead and, after a pitching change, Tom Malafronte (Somerville, NJ) allowed an RBI double to increase the Buckeyes’ lead to 6-3.

Rutgers put two runners on with one out in the eighth, but a 6-4-3 double play ended the threat. In the ninth, Rich Canuso (Monroe, NJ) hammered his third home run of the season to finish the scoring.

Healing (1.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R) suffered the loss and fell to 2-1, while Parker (6 IP, 8 H, 3 R) earned his second no-decision. Canuso continued his hot hitting, collecting three hits in five at bats, while Badger was 2-for-3 and reached base in four of five plate appearances. Canuso finished the week hitting .600 (12-for-20) over the final five games. Jeff Frazier (Toms River, NJ) extended his hitting streak to 13 games, but was just 1-for-5.

Rutgers heads back to NJ on Sunday morning and will play again next Wednesday, March 23, when it travels to Teaneck, NJ to face FDU at 3:00 p.m.
