  • BOCA RATON, FL – After scoring three runs in the top of the 10th inning, the Rutgers baseball team (4-10) allowed four in the bottom of the inning as No. 14 Florida Atlantic (20-2) rallied for a 12-11 win over the Scarlet Knights tonight at FAU Stadium. The Owls’ Derek Hutton singled up the middle to drive in Robert Orton with the game-winning run, sending Rutgers to its third-straight late-inning loss.

The Scarlet Knights jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first, when Graig Badger (Union, NJ) and Jeff Grose (Iselin, NJ) opened with back-to-back singles, putting runners at the corners with no outs. A steal by Grose put both runners in scoring position and, on a walk to Jeff Frazier (Toms River, NJ), Badger scampered home on a passed ball with the first run of the game. Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY) then lofted a sacrifice fly onto the warning track in right, scoring Grose and sending Frazier to third. Two batters later, Rich Canuso (Monroe, NJ) singled down the line in right to increase the lead to 3-0, while the inning’s final run crossed on a fielder’s choice off the bat of DH Steve Hook (Langhorne, PA).

FAU plated two runs in the first on a bases-loaded walk to Rob Horst and a sacrifice fly by Tim Mascia and picked up one more in the second on a fielder’s choice, taking advantage of five walks from RU starter Jim Jansen (Pascack Valley, NJ).

Following a pair of scoreless innings, Rutgers added four more in the top of the fifth to take an 8-3 lead and give Jansen some much-needed breathing room. Defendis got things rolling with a one-out walk and moved over to third on a single to right from Colin Gaynor (Toms River, NJ). Canuso drilled another RBI single to plate Defendis and Gaynor came across when Canuso stole second and the throw sailed into centerfield. With two outs and the bases loaded, Badger singled to center, plating Canuso and pinch-hitter Cory Rodriguez (Bridgewater, NJ), who walked on five pitches.

FAU cut the gap to 8-6 quickly when Jansen walked the first two hitters in the fifth and allowed a three-run home run to Anthony Albano. FA cut the gap to 8-7 in the sixth on a leadoff double by Jeff Fiorentino and a one-out sacrifice fly off the bat off Mascia and tied the game on a two-out wild pitch in the seventh.

Rutgers scored three time in the top of the 10th inning as Badger and Grose led off with back-to-back singles and scored on a two-run single by Gaynor. An infield single by Canuso loaded the bases and a walk to Rodriguez forced home the third run.

RU banged out 15 hits in the game, led by the 4-for-6, two RBI effort of Canuso. Badger finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI as well. Erik Dial (Basking Ridge, NJ) allowed two runs in .1 innings to absorb the loss.
