  • CORAL GABLES, FL – Miami’s Dan Touchet allowed just one hit and one unearned run through six innings to lead the sixth-ranked Hurricanes to a 10-5 win over Rutgers tonight before 2,631 fans at Mark Light Stadium. The Scarlet Knights were held hitless until the top of the sixth, when Nick Cerulo (Woodbridge, NJ) singled to open the inning. With the loss, RU falls to 4-7. Miami is now 14-3.

The Scarlet Knights took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first without a hit when Graig Badger (Union, NJ) walked to open the game, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jeff Grose (Iselin, NJ), advanced to third on an overthrown pick-off attempt and scored on an infield groundout from Jeff Frazier (Toms River, NJ). The ‘Canes loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the inning on three walks, but a double play ended the inning without a run. The lead lasted until the third, when Miami’s Paco Figueroa led off with a walk, stole second and third, and scored on an infield groundout.

Miami took control of the game in the fourth, plating six runs to take a 7-1 lead. Jim Burt and Brendan Katin led off with back-to-back singles, while a fielding error by Cory Rodriguez (Bridgewater, NJ) on a sacrifice bunt attempt loaded the bases with no outs. UM catcher Erick San Pedro grounded to short, driving in a run, and another scored when Rich Canuso (Monroe, NJ) mishandled Badger’s relay throw. UM added two more runs and polished off the scoring with a two-run single from Jim Burt off RU reliever Jim Jansen (Pascack Valley, NJ), who replaced starter Shaun Parker (Mt. Holly, NJ) with one out in the inning.

Trailing 8-1, Rutgers tacked on a run in the seventh when Canuso and Colin Gaynor (Toms River, NJ) greeted UM reliever with back-to-back singles and, with one out, Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY) drove a single down the line in right. The ‘Canes responded with a pair of their own in the bottom of the inning against RU reliever Aaron Kalb (Middletown, NJ), aided by Frazier’s dropped fly ball in right, to increase their lead to 10-2.

Rutgers added three more in the eighth when Badger and pinch-hitter David Williams (Franklin, NJ) reached on back-to-back walks and scored on an RBI single from Frazier and a groundout by Canuso. Frazier later scored on a passed ball to cut the lead to 10-5.

Parker (3.1 IP, 5 H, 7 R) took the loss, falling to 1-2 this season. Jansen pitched well in relief, allowing just one unearned run in 2.2 innings of work, despite walking four hitters. The Scarlet Knights banged out seven hits in the game – two from Defendis – while Badger reached base in four of five plate appearances (1-for-2, two walks, one HBP).

The series wraps up on Sunday at 1:00 p.m., with Erik Dial (Basking Ridge, NJ) schedule to start for Rutgers opposite Brandon Camardese.
