  • CORAL GABLES, FL – The sixth-ranked Miami baseball team (13-3) scored five runs in the fourth and added four more in the seventh to defeat Rutgers, 12-2, in the series opener tonight at Mark Light Stadium. After falling behind, 3-0, Rutgers cut the lead to 3-2 before the ‘Canes five-run fourth. With the loss, RU falls to 4-6, while Miami is now 13-3.

Miami jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second on RBI singles from Gaby Sanchez and John Jay and a run-scoring double by Erick San Pedro. The Scarlet Knights, however, cut the lead to one, 3-2, when Graig Badger (Union, NJ) singled home Jason Grover (Montgomery, NJ), who reached on a one-out double in the third, and Colin Gaynor (Toms River, NJ) knocked in Jeff Frazier (Toms River, NJ), who doubled off the wall in center to open the fourth inning.

The ‘Canes broke the game open with five runs in the fourth inning, chasing RU starter Jack Egbert (Rutherford, NJ) from the game after just 3.1 innings of work. Back-to-back, two-run doubles from Ryan Braun and Jim Burt accounted for four of the runs. Miami extended its lead to 12-2 with four more in the seventh on a bases-loaded walk, a bases-loaded balk and RBI singles from Paco Figueroa and Brian Barton.

Rutgers banged out 10 hits, including two each from Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY) and Grover. In addition, freshman Tim Querns (Cherry Hill, NJ) pinch hit in the ninth and doubled into the left-field corner for his first career hit in his first career at bat. Egbert (3.1 IP, 9 H, 8 R) absorbed the loss and fell to 1-1.
