  • ATLANTA, GA – Georgia Tech scored six runs in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run home run from Tyler Greene, to open a 9-1 lead en route to a 13-6 win over Rutgers in the series finale today at Russ Chandler Stadium. With the loss, RU falls to 4-5. GT is now 8-5.

After loading the bases and failing to score in the first, Rutgers allowed a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning when Eric Patterson led off with a double and back-to-back walks loaded the bases. A fielder’s choice drove home the first run and a balk by RU starter Erik Dial (Basking Ridge, NJ) allowed the second run to score.

In the top of the second, nine-spot hitter Jason Grover (Montgomery, NJ) drove a fastball over the fence in right-center for his first career home run, while cutting the lead to 2-1. Tech added a single run in the fourth on a home run by Micah Owings and six more in the decisive fifth inning.

Dial retired the first hitter he faced, but allowed another double to Patterson and an RBI single to Wes Hodges. He then hit Brandon Boggs with a pitch and allowed another RBI single as Georgia Tech increased its lead to 5-1. Sophomore Matt Pustay (Hamilton, NJ) came on in relief and yielded an RBI double, sac fly and Greene’s home run before striking out Steve Blackwood to end the inning.

Rutgers fought back with three runs in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY) and a two-run home run by Nick Cerulo (Woodbridge, NJ), cutting the lead to 9-4, but GT tacked on another in the bottom of the inning to go ahead, 10-4.

Rutgers kept the game interesting, scoring two more in the top of the seventh to cut the lead to 10-6. After two quick outs, Colin Gaynor (Toms River, NJ) singled through the left side and Defendis followed with an RBI double to left-center. Cerulo then singled up the middle to score Defendis and cut the lead to 10-6. The Yellow Jackets added three more in the bottom of the inning, opening a 13-6 lead.

Grose (3-for-3, double, 2 BB) and Cerulo (4-for-5, HR, 2 2B, 3 RBI) led Rutgers offensively. Defendis added two hits and two RBI.

Rutgers returns to action on Friday, March 12, when it opens a three-game series with No. 6 Miami at Mark Light Stadium in Coral Gables, FL.
