ORLANDO, Fla. (April 27, 2014) – Rutgers baseball scored first for the third-straight day, but ultimately dropped the series finale, 10-3, to No. 22 UCF Sunday at Jay Bergman Field. Freshman Mike Carter (Bloomfield, N.J.) led all players in the game with three hits.

Junior Vinny Zarrillo (Forked River, N.J.) also had a multiple-hit day with a pair of singles, while senior Pat Sweeney (Sparta, N.J.) successfully reached base three times on a walk and two hit by pitch. Freshman Christian Campbell (Sayreville, N.J.) added a single and run scored.

On the mound, redshirt freshman Kyle Driscoll (Toms River, N.J.) was forced to leave early after one inning in his 10th start of the season. Classmate Kevin Baxter (Waterford, N.J.) (2-7) picked up and tossed four innings in relief, but suffered the loss after giving up two runs.

The Scarlet Knights (19-22, 6-8) struck first for the third time in as many days with a run in the first. Carter singled to start the game and moved up when Sweeney drew a walk. Following a fly out, senior Lou Clemente (Union, N.J.) worked another walk to load the bases. Senior Nick Favatella (Washington Township, N.J.) next stepped up and induced the third base on balls in the inning for an RBI, also forcing UCF to call to the bullpen. The rally did not extend from there as a double play ended the situation.

UCF (28-16, 15-3) responded with a pair of runs in its first at bat. With two on and two out, a failed pickoff attempt moved both runners in scoring position. Matt Diorio then looped a double just inside the left field line to bring in two.

After both sides tossed zeroes on the scoreboard for the next three frames, RU tied it up in the fifth. Campbell laced a single to start and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore R.J. Devish (Beachwood, N.J.). Carter next grounded a ball towards the second baseman that hit skipped above his head and into the outfield for an RBI single.

However, the hosts tallied two in their half of the fifth to reclaim the advantage. A leadoff double came eventually came around on a sacrifice fly and Derrick Salberg connected for a two-out RBI single. Another run came across on a sacrifice fly to make it 5-2 through six. Five more between the seventh and eight broke open the game.

The Scarlet Knights added one run in the ninth inning. Sophomore John Jennings (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) and junior Joe D’Annunzio (Scotch Plains, N.J.) both walked to start the frame, with freshman Chris Folinusz (Cranford, N.J.) following with a RBI single through the left side.

Jarrod Petree (3-0) earned the win for UCF.

Rutgers will return to Bainton Field Tuesday to host Villanova at 3:30 p.m.
