NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (April 2, 2014) – Iona broke open a 4-4 tie with two runs in the seventh inning to defeat Rutgers baseball, 6-4, Wednesday at City Park. The teams split the midweek home-and-home, as the Scarlet Knights won Tuesday at Bainton Field, 7-5.

Junior Vinny Zarrillo (Forked River, N.J.) led RU with two hits and two walks, while freshman Christian Campbell (Sayreville, N.J.) reached base three times on two singles and a walk. Freshman Tom Marcinczyk (Middlesex, N.J.) tallied two hits to total five against Iona.

Redshirt freshman Kevin Baxter (Waterford, N.J.) (1-4) pitched five innings of relief for the second straight outing, giving up two runs and three hits. The right-hander also struck out three in a tough-luck defeat. Freshman Ryan Fleming (Churchville, Pa.) took a no-decision in his fifth start of the season, tossing three innings.

RU (10-14) scored in the first inning for the 10th time this season to jump up 2-0. Freshman Mike Carter (Bloomfield, N.J.) and senior Nick Favatella (Washington Township, N.J.) both walked to begin the game, as Zarrillo came through with one-out RBI double down the third base line for the first run of the day. Junior Joe D’Annunzio (Scotch Plains, N.J.) followed that with a sacrifice fly to center to score Favatella.

Iona (4-13) took advantage of a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first that eventually came around on a sacrifice fly. The Scarlet Knights immediately got that run back in the second on an RBI groundout by Carter to drive in junior Michael Zavala (Randolph, N.J.). Zavala had walked to start the inning and moved up on a walk to Campbell and a sacrifice bunt by sophomore John Jennings (Berkeley Heights, N.J.).

The lead grew to 4-1 in the third when Marcinczyk beat out an infield single to score senior Brian O’Grady (Warminster, Pa.), who singled to start the inning. A walk drawn by Zarrillo and a sacrifice bunt by D’Annunzio advanced the run along.

The Gaels rallied with two outs in the third to tie the game at four. With the bases loaded, a wild pitch allowed a run to score and a two-run triple followed.

The game stayed that way through the middle innings until IC used a hit by pitch and three consecutive singles to plate the go-ahead runs. RU put two on in the next half inning, but both were stranded by Andrew Pucillo (1-2), who earned the win.

John Daddino allowed a two-out walk to Zarrillo in the ninth, but picked up a strikeout to notch his first save of the season.

Rutgers will next return home to face No. 10 Houston Friday at Bainton Field. It will be the first home weekend series of the season for the Scarlet Knights.

    NOTES
D’Annunzio made his first career start at first base … Carter stole three bases, the most by a Scarlet Knight since D’Annunzio swiped that many against West Virginia April 15, 2012 … RU had two sacrifice bunts in a game for the second time this year, also laying down that many at Louisville March 23 … Favatella has started the last 169 games, the sixth-longest active streak in the nation … a freshman pitcher has started the last 11 games for Rutgers … the offense was doomed with 10 runners left on base … Iona only recorded five hits in the game … the game lasted 2:35.
