  • ATLANTA, GA - After hitting a two-run home run in the sixth to erase a 4-3 Rutgers lead, GT’s Brandon Boggs drove in the game-winning run with a single in the bottom of the ninth as No. 13 Georgia Tech upended Rutgers, 6-5, tonight at Russ Chandler Stadium.

With runners at the corners and the game tied at 5-5 in the ninth, Boggs lined the first offering from RU reliever Matt Pustay (Hamilton, NJ) into deep centerfield, ending the game and giving Georgia Tech its fourth-straight win over Rutgers. The Yellow Jackets used a one-out double from Mike Nickeas and an intentional walk to Micah Owings to set the stage for Boggs.

After three-and-a-half scoreless innings, the Yellow Jackets put runners on first and second with two outs in the fourth for Steve Blackwood, hitting just .219 entering the game. Blackwood fell behind RU starter Jack Egbert (Rutherford, NJ), 1-2, but dumped a flare into shallow left-center, scoring Mike Nickeas, who reached on an infield single. Wes Hodges then followed with a single to left, scoring two more for a 3-0 Georgia Tech lead.

In the top of the fifth, Cory Rodriguez (Bridgewater, NJ) led off with a sharp single to right, snapping Owings’ string of 12-straight retired hitters. Colin Gaynor (Toms River, NJ) followed with a walk and, with one out, Nick Cerulo (Woodbridge, NJ) looped a single into left, scoring Rodriguez. A single from nine-spot hitter Jason Grover (Montgomery, NJ) loaded the bases for Graig Badger (Union, NJ) who forced in another run with a walk to cut the lead to 3-2. RU appeared in good position for more, but Owings bounced back with a popup from Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY) and a strikeout by Jeff Frazier (Toms River, NJ) to avert further damage.

Rutgers and Georgia Tech exchanged two-run home runs in the sixth inning. In the top of the frame, sophomore Steve Hook (Langhorne, PA) hit a two-run blast to right, giving RU a short-lived, 4-3 lead. In the bottom of the inning, Brandon Boggs launched an opposite-field shot to reestablish the Yellow Jacket lead, 5-4. They reloaded the bases with two outs, but Egbert struck out Tyler Greene to end the frame, one pitch after head coach Danny Hall and an assistant coach were ejected.

In the top of the eighth, RU tied the game at 5-5 when Frazier led off with a double down the line in left and promptly scored on a single to center by Canuso. Pinch-runner Dave Williams (Franklin, NJ), who replaced Canuso at first, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch, but was stranded there when GT’s John Goodman struck out the side in relief.

Tom Malafronte (Somerville, NJ) was the tough-luck loser, falling to 0-1. He allowed one run on two hits in two-plus innings of relief. Egbert (6.1 IP, 9 H, 5 R) registered his second no-decision of the season. RU collected seven hits – two from Cerulo, who was making his first start of the season after recovering from thumb surgery in January.

The two teams will return to action on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Senior Shaun Parker (Mt. Holly, NJ) will make his third start for Rutgers this season.
