PROVIDENCE, R.I. (March 24, 2014) – After earning a win at No. 7 Louisville Sunday, freshman right-hander Gaby Rosa (Perth Amboy, N.J.) of the Rutgers baseball team has been selected to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll. It was only the second career start for the rookie, who has pitched to a 0.93 ERA over his last five appearances overall.
Rosa (2-0) did not allow an earned run over eight innings against the Cardinals, who entered the weekend as the most prolific offense in the conference statistically. He surrendered just three hits, two hit batters and one walk while keeping the hitters off balance by recording 17 of his 24 outs through the air. Rosa did not permit a hit until the fourth inning of the 107-pitch outing.
This performance backs his first career start in which he gave up one earned run over seven innings to defeat Lafayette on a neutral field. For the season, he leads the staff with a 1.69 ERA over 21.1 innings and opposing hitters are batting just .179 against.
Rosa’s honor marks the third American Athletic Conference weekly award for the Scarlet Knights this season, as senior Brian O’Grady (Warminster, Pa.) (Player of the Week) and sophomore Howie Brey (Middletown, N.J.) (Weekly Honor Roll) picked up accolades March 3.
Rutgers (8-12, 1-2) next returns home after its spring break trip to host Rider Wednesday at Bainton Field at 3 p.m.
