    Win-Rosa (1-0) • Loss-Leeds (0-1) • Save-None • T-2:17 • A-96 • The Diamond • Richmond, Va.

RICHMOND, Va. (March 15, 2014) – Freshman right-hander Gaby Rosa (Perth Amboy, N.J.) pitched seven effective innings to lead Rutgers baseball to a 5-1 victory over Lafayette Saturday in a neutral site matchup at The Diamond. It was the first career start and victory for Rosa, as the Scarlet Knights increased their winning streak to four games.

After giving up a run on a two-out single in the first inning, Rosa settled down and did not allow any other runs from there. He scattered five hits in the 91-pitch outing with five strikeouts, including striking out the side in the sixth inning. The right-hander stifled potential LC rallies by stranding seven runners on base.

Offensively, Rutgers (7-8) took advantage of five errors committed by the Leopards to score five unearned runs. Senior Lou Clemente (Union, N.J.) led the bats with a 2-for-3 game.

Down 1-0 in the third, RU tied the game with two outs on an error by Lafayette (5-6). Freshman Tom Marcinczyk (Middlesex, N.J.) walked to lead off the inning and stood at second base with two outs. Classmate Mike Carter (Bloomfield, N.J.) next chopped a ball to the right side for an infield single, but the Leopards errantly threw it away to allow Marcinczyk to come around as the tying run.

The game would stay knotted until the fifth when Rutgers struck for two runs to take the lead. Clemente singled to start and advanced to second on a wild pitch with one out. Freshman Christian Campbell (Sayreville, N.J.) worked a walk and senior Pat Sweeney (Sparta, N.J.) reached on an error to load the bases for Carter. The outfielder lifted a ball deep enough to left field for a sacrifice fly, scoring Clemente. Senior Nick Favatella (Washington Township, N.J.) next came through with a two-out RBI single up the middle to drive in Campbell and make it 3-1.

Rosa sat down Lafayette in order on strikes in the sixth and RU added another in its half of the inning. Junior Vinny Zarrillo (Forked River, N.J.) doubled to the left field corner with no outs, moving up to third on a failed pickoff attempt at second. Clemente then added an insurance run with a RBI single to right field.

The fifth RU run scored in the seventh when Sweeney walked and came all the way around from first on a sacrifice bunt by Carter. The throw to first went awry, with LC unable to chase it down in time.

Senior Slater McCue (Radnor, Pa.) did not allow a run or hit in the final two innings to seal the win. The game ended when McCue struck out a batter in the ninth and junior catcher Michael Zavala (Randolph, N.J.) picked a runner off at second on the play.

The Scarlet Knights will next look to sweep the PK5 Classic with a game against host VCU Sunday at 11 a.m.

    NOTES
