    Win-Brey (2-0)  Loss-Yarbrough (1-1)  Save-Young (2)  T-2:15  A-322

Rutgers jumped up to an early 3-0 lead and held on late to take the opener of the doubleheader, 4-2. Brey (2-0) earned his second win of the season with 6.1 scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and two walks in the 90-pitch outing. He induced 14 outs in the air, as the left-hander has not permitted a run in his last 15.1 frames on the mound.

At the plate, O’Grady had his second four-hit game of the season, also launching his second home run of the season. The first baseman scored three of the four RU runs in the ballgame.

The Scarlet Knights scored in the first inning for the third straight game to take an early 2-0 advantage. Senior Nick Favatella (Washington Township, N.J.) singled on a full count to start the rally, moving up to third on a hit through the right side by O’Grady, who advanced to second on the throw. Junior Vinny Zarrillo (Forked River, N.J.) next grounded a ball to second base to score Favatella for an RBI. Following that, junior Michael Zavala (Randolph, N.J.) connected for a two-out RBI single to plate O’Grady.

Then in the third, O’Grady launched a home run to right field on an 0-2 pitch with two outs. He leads the team with a .448 batting average, a .759 slugging percentage and a .469 on-base percentage through eight games.

Brey used that run support to his advantage to work into the seventh inning unscathed. After recording a strikeout to end his day, redshirt freshman Max Herrmann (Rutherford, N.J.) entered out of the bullpen and retired two batters to strand a runner at first. ODU battled back for a pair of runs in the eighth, but Herrmann kept the lead with a strikeout to quell the rally.

Rutgers added an important insurance run in the top of the ninth to go up 4-2. With one down, O’Grady lined a ball to the right-center gap and raced into second with a double. Zarrillo followed that with a single for his second RBI of the game.

Junior Jon Young (Old Bridge, N.J.) allowed just a two-out single in the ninth and threw 13 of his 16 pitches for strikes to pick up his second save. It was the third straight game the team allowed two runs, as the defense did not commit and error.

Ryan Yarbrough (1-1) took the loss for ODU with three runs surrendered over seven innings. Both teams had seven hits in the contest.

    Win-Alexander (1-0)  Loss-Driscoll (1-1)  T-2:55  A-322

Rutgers scored in the first inning once again, but big innings from Old Dominion resulted in a 12-3 win for the hosts in the second game of the doubleheader. ODU out-hit RU 12-6.

Starting fast, Favatella roped a one-out double in the first to put himself in scoring position. O’Grady next grounded a ball that went through the infield for an error, scoring the first run. Zarrillo then collected his third RBI of the day with a single to make it 2-0.

That would prove to be the only significant rally for the Scarlet Knights, with ODU responding with a five-run third and a three-run fourth to open up the game. Freshman Mike Carter (Bloomfield, N.J.) lifted a sacrifice fly to score classmate Tom Marcinczyk (Middlesex, N.J.) and make it 8-3 in the top of the fifth, but the Monarchs tacked on four more runs to solidify the game.

Relievers Ryan Fleming (Churchville, Pa.) and Gaby Rosa (Perth Amboy, N.J.) made their collegiate debuts with stints on the mound, with seniors Charlie Lasky (Freehold, N.J.) and Slater McCue (Radnor, Pa.) both making appearances late in the game.

Tommy Alexander (1-0) tossed five innings for Old Dominion to earn the win, while redshirt freshman Kyle Driscoll (Toms River, N.J.) (1-1) suffered the loss in his second start of the season.

The rubber game of the series is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. Redshirt freshman Kevin Baxter (Waterford, N.J.) will make the start on the mound for RU.
