CLEARWATER, Fla. (May 21, 2013) – Three members of the Rutgers baseball team were named All-BIG EAST, as announced by the conference at the Opening Ceremonies of the 2013 BIG EAST Championships Tuesday at the Sheraton Sand Key Hotel. Senior Jeff Melillo (Annandale, N.J.) and junior Nick Favatella (Washington Township, N.J.) both earned Second Team honors, while senior Steve Zavala (Randolph, N.J.) picked up a spot on Third Team.
The Scarlet Knights now have 64 all-time selections in 18 years in the BIG EAST. The All-BIG EAST teams are complied after a vote of the 11 league head coaches, with skippers not being able to vote for their own players.
Melillo earns BIG EAST recognition for the second straight year as a catcher. The senior led the league with 21 runners caught stealing, committing a league-low three passed balls in 51 starts behind the dish. At the plate, he paced the team with six home runs and knocked in 37 runs hitting in the middle of the order.
Favatella picks up all-conference honors for the first time as a second baseman. Batting second in every game throughout the year, he was fifth in the league with a .379 batting average against BIG EAST opponents. He leads RU with 19 multiple-hit games and has 12 stolen bases.
Zavala garners acknowledgment for the first time after being fourth in the BIG EAST with a .451 on-base percentage this season. The right fielder batted .329 in 50 games, picking up 57 hits and 35 walks. He has been hot of late with nine hits in the last six games.
