PROVIDENCE, R.I. (March 11, 2013) – Senior outfielder Steve Zavala (Randolph, N.J.) earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, the league office announced Monday. He went 6-for-10 with two homers and five runs scored in Rutgers’ latest series at William & Mary.
It is the first career BIG EAST honor for Zavala, who leads the Scarlet Knights in batting (.390), slugging (.585), on-base (.479), runs (10), hits (16) and RBIs (7). He has started all 12 games this season in right field, reaching base safely in each one.
In the opener against the Tribe, Zavala went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run in the fourth that tied the score. He followed that with another 3-for-4 performance to help RU win the middle game of the series and extend his hitting streak to 10 games. The left-hander hitter went deep for the second time in as many days in the sixth inning, sending a hanging slider over the right field fence to put the Scarlet Knights out in front en route 5-3 victory.
For his career, Zavala has played in 130 games for Rutgers, making 104 starts.
The Scarlet Knights (3-9) will be back in action Friday, March 15 to start a series at the University of Richmond.
