Scarlet Knights to meet Yellow Jackets for 11th straight season

    PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Feb. 28, 2013) – Traveling south once again, Rutgers baseball will take on No. 16 Georgia Tech in a three-game series at Russ Chandler Stadium beginning Friday, March 1. The first 24 games on the Scarlet Knights’ schedule are on the road.

    All three games in the series will be available to view online. The opener will be broadcast on ESPN3, with the last two games on RamblinWreck All-Access.

    The Scarlet Knights (2-4) took two-of-three last weekend to win the series at Old Dominion. In the opener, senior Rob Smorol (Clark, N.J.) tossed eight scoreless innings to earn BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week. The left-hander has allowed just three earned runs in his first 14.0 innings (1.93 ERA), with 13 strikeouts and only two walks. Senior Jeff Melillo (Annandale, N.J.) homered in the second inning to provide offensive support.

    Forced to play its second doubleheader in as many weekends due to weather, Rutgers dropped the opener before exploding for 17 runs for a win in the finale. Junior Ross Costello (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) collected six RBIs in the game, including a grand slam in the first inning. Junior Nick Favatella (Washington Township, N.J.) and sophomore Vinny Zarrillo (Forked River, N.J.) each had four hits as every starter scored at least one run. Favatella has reached base safely in the last 15 games dating back to last season.

    Head coach Fred Hill will go with the same pitching rotation for the for the third-straight weekend. For the season, the staff has allowed the least number of walks (10) amongst BIG EAST teams.


    The Yellow Jackets (8-1) have won their last three games, including two midweek contests at Georgia Southern. Last weekend, Georgia Tech took two of three from St. John’s at Russ Chandler Stadium. Buck Farmer pitched seven scoreless innings with seven strikeouts in the opener in a no-decision as GT walked off on a single from Dylan Dore in the bottom of the ninth. Farmer had nine strikeouts in seven frames versus RU last season. After dropping the middle game to the Red Storm, 9-7, the Yellow Jackets rebounded for a comfortable 10-1 victory in the finale.

    GT has hit .339 as a team so far this season, with Daniel Palka recording a .559 batting average and .882 slugging percentage to lead the team. Zane Evans has notched four home runs. The program is ranked No. 16 in the latest Baseball America poll.

    Veteran head coach Danny Hall is in his 20th season as the leader of the Yellow Jackets. Hall and Hill have 2,096 combined wins between them.


    Rutgers and Georgia Tech have met in Atlanta on a routine basis going back to 1988. The Yellow Jackets have taken the last 13 in the series, including a three-game sweep last season. GT leads the series 44-11, with the last RU win coming Feb. 29, 2008 (10-6).


    Rutgers will head back to Virginia to take on William & Mary in a three-game series. The two teams have not met since 2006.
