PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Feb. 25, 2013) – Senior left-hander Rob Smorol (Clark, N.J.) of the Rutgers baseball team has been named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday. He tossed eight shutout innings to help the Scarlet Knights defeat Old Dominion, 3-0, in the series opener over the weekend.
Making his second start of the season, Smorol had control of all his pitches to pick up the victory on the mound. The lefty struck out seven in the outing, allowing just four hits and one walk. He only had one jam with multiple runners on base at the same time (first).
It was the 18th career win for the senior, tying him for seventh-most most in program history. Smorol went 8-4 last season on the way to earning All-BIG EAST Third Team honors. He has allowed just three earned runs in 14.0 innings for a 1.93 earned run average so far in 2013.
This is the first career BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week honor for Smorol, who appeared on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll May 21, 2012.
Smorol will make his next start at No. 19 Georgia Tech Friday, March 1 at 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
