PISCATAWAY, N.J. (July 19, 2012) –Rutgers senior catcher Jeff Melillo (Annandale, N.J.) and classmate Charlie Law (Mainland, N.J.), first baseman and pitcher, were recently named New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) All-Stars. The game will be hosted by the Vermont Mountaineers and is scheduled for July 22 at Recreation Field in Montpelier, Vt., at 6:30 p.m.
Melillo, who plays for the Newport Gulls, was named a starter on the East Division squad. The catcher leads the Gulls with a .390 batting average in 21 games. He is tied for the team lead with 10 doubles. His five homeruns are tied for second on the squad, while his 25 RBIs rank third. Melillo has helped lead the Newport Gulls to the top of the East Division with a 24-7 record.
Law was named a substitute at first base for the West Division after leading the North Adams SteepleCats with a .346 batting average in 29 games. He also tops the SteepleCats with 30 RBIs, five homers and 11 doubles. Law has also made six appearances on the mound for North Adams, starting in four contests. Through 28.2 innings of work, Law has compiled a 4.40 ERA and pitched one of the team’s two complete games. He is third on the squad with 28 strikeouts.
The NECBL is a summer collegiate baseball league that runs from early June to early August, with each team playing a 42-game schedule. To be in the league, a student-athlete must be enrolled in an NCAA sanctioned college or university, be in good academic standing, completed one year of eligibility and have at least one year of eligibility remaining.
