Sophomore Nick Favatella extended his hitting streak to 18 games.

ATLANTA (March 2, 2012) – No. 9 Georgia Tech pounded out 23 hits to push past Rutgers University baseball, 16-2, on Friday in the series opener at Russ Chandler Stadium. Sophomore Nick Favatella (Washington Township, N.J.) highlighted the day for the Scarlet Knights with a solo home run in the sixth inning to extend his hitting streak to 18 games, dating back to last season.

The Yellow Jackets (8-2) struck early and often, starting with a four-run first inning that included a three-run home run by Sam Dove. GT extended their lead with five runs between the third, fourth and fifth innings and broke open the game with seven runs in the seventh inning.

Buck Farmer (2-1) earned the win for the hosts, pitching seven innings with nine strikeouts. Senior Ryan Fasano (Stony Point, N.Y.) (0-1) took the loss for RU (3-4), but his start was cut short to only 2.1 innings after being struck by a line drive up the middle.

Favatella collected his team-leading 10th RBI of the season with a long ball to centerfield on an 0-2 pitch to put Rutgers on the scoreboard in the sixth inning. The Scarlet Knights added another run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Pat Sweeney (Sparta, N.J.) to score senior Patrick Kivlehan (West Nyack, N.Y.) who had tripled off the leftfield wall to start the inning.

Kivlehan and sophomore Brian O’Grady (Warminster, Pa.) led the offense with two hits each. O’Grady now has a nine-game hitting streak.

Rutgers will look to rebound in the second game of the series on Saturday with junior lefty Rob Smorol (Clark, N.J.) (1-1) on the mound against Georgia Tech’s Matt Grimes (1-1). First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Russ Chandler Stadium.
