Athletic Academic Advisor
Ramel Meekins begins his first season as an Athletic Academic Advisor with the Rutgers Football Program.
Meekins, is a 2008 graduate of Rutgers University and a former standout at defensive tackle on the football team. Meekins came to Rutgers as a walk-on from Westwood High School in Westwood, NJ. Initially recruited to wrestle at Rutgers, Meekins lettered in both sports and captured a Top-12 National Ranking in Wrestling as well as two-time Defensive MVP honors for the 2005 and 2006 football teams. He was named team captain as a senior and helped lead Rutgers to its first of four consecutive football bowl championships in 2006. A four-year letter winner for the Scarlet Knights, Meekins was an All-Big East selection and played professionally as a free-agent with the Indianapolis Colts and The Toronto Argonauts of the CFL.
As an undergraduate, Meekins served as a Member of The Leadership Council, Athletes in Action and was a Youth Mentor for the inner-city program Urban Impact. He graduated with a double major in Sociology and Criminal Justice in May 2008. Prior to his return back to “The Banks”, Meekins held positions as an In-School Suspension Coordinator at Teaneck High School, and also experimented in Coaching at the Division II level with Tiffin University.
Meekins’ return began in August of 2011, assuming the role as an assistant to the Academic Support team. Under the direction of his former college Advisors; Scott Walker and Jenna Beverly, Meekins served as a mentor and counselor for first year students and assisted in the adjustment to a college course load and work schedule. Recently promoted as an Academic Advisor in the Spring of 2012, Meekins’ duties include daily advisement to the Rutgers Football Team on academic, career and personal issues; identifying the best educational and career options appropriate for each student and assists with the analysis of each option. In collaboration with the Academic Support Team his goal is to ensure that every student athlete is in pursuit of obtaining a Degree from Rutgers University.
Meekins resides in Somerset, and frequently visits his hometown of Westwood to speak to youth and see friends and family residing in North Jersey,
